Transarterial microembolization (TAME) is a minimally invasive option for frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) that is not improving fast enough — for people months into the condition who still cannot sleep on their side, dress comfortably, or lift their arm, despite physiotherapy, medication or injections.
Frozen shoulder is associated with inflammation of the joint capsule, and in many persistent cases with abnormal microvessels that develop around the inflamed capsule and keep the pain cycle going. In TAME, an interventional specialist advances a thin catheter through a tiny puncture under real-time X-ray guidance into the small arteries supplying the shoulder capsule, and selectively treats the abnormal microvessels associated with persistent inflammation — while preserving healthy circulation and the surrounding tissues. There is no incision, no capsular cutting, no manipulation under anaesthesia, and no implant.
Most suitable patients are discharged the same day, and TAME can be combined with a continued rehabilitation plan — reducing pain is often what finally allows physiotherapy to work.
