As one of the leading pediatric transplant centers worldwide, Sheba combines cutting-edge science, extensive clinical experience, and a deeply compassionate approach tailored to each child and family.

The Pediatric Hemato-Oncology and BMT Unit at Sheba is specifically designed to support children during the most delicate phases of treatment.
Private, advanced isolation rooms with HEPA air filtration to minimize infection risk
Highly trained multidisciplinary teams available 24/7
A child-friendly environment focused on both medical excellence and emotional well-being
Each detail is carefully planned to ensure maximum safety, comfort, and continuous monitoring throughout the transplant process.
When is Bone Marrow Transplant Needed?
BMT is a potentially curative treatment for a wide range of serious conditions.
Malignant Diseases (Cancers)
Leukemias (ALL, AML, CML)
Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin lymphomas
Solid tumors (e.g., neuroblastoma, sarcomas, brain tumors)
Non-Malignant Conditions
Blood disorders (thalassemia, sickle cell disease, aplastic anemia, Fanconi anemia)
Immune deficiencies (SCID, HLH, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
Metabolic diseases (e.g., Hurler syndrome, adrenoleukodystrophy)
For many of these conditions, BMT offers the only curative option.
Types of Pediatric Transplants at Sheba
Autologous Transplant (Using the Child’s Own Cells)
Used mainly for solid tumors. Stem cells are collected, preserved, and re-infused after intensive therapy without the need for a donor.
Allogeneic Transplant (Using Donor Cells)
Used for leukemias, genetic diseases, and immune disorders. Donors may include:
Fully matched siblings
Haploidentical (half-matched) family donors, such as parents
Unrelated donors from international registries
Cord Blood Transplant
Stem cells collected from umbilical cord blood provide an additional option, especially when no matched donor is available.
Advanced Donor Matching & Laboratory Precision
Finding the right donor is critical. Sheba’s on-site HLA and molecular laboratories use high-resolution DNA testing to ensure the closest possible match.
As a full member of international donor programs, Sheba provides access to global donor registries, significantly increasing the chances of finding a suitable donor for every child.
Cutting-Edge Transplant Techniques
When a perfect donor match is not available, Sheba applies advanced technologies to improve safety and outcomes:
T-cell depletion to reduce complications
CD34+ cell selection for precise stem cell transplantation
Integration with CAR-T therapy for high-risk or relapsed cancers
These innovations allow physicians to safely perform transplants even in complex or previously untreatable cases.
The Transplant Journey: What to Expect
1. Preparation & Conditioning
Children undergo carefully tailored treatment (chemotherapy ± radiation) to prepare the body for new stem cells.
2. Stem Cell Infusion
The transplant itself is a simple intravenous infusion, similar to a blood transfusion.
3. Engraftment & Recovery
New cells begin forming a healthy immune system—this critical phase is closely monitored in a protected environment.
Expert Monitoring & Post-Transplant Care
Inpatient Phase (3–6 weeks)
Continuous monitoring of blood counts and immune recovery
Preventive treatments against infections
Nutritional and supportive care
Outpatient Phase (Day 30–100+)
Monitoring for graft-versus-host disease (GvHD)
Advanced testing to confirm successful engraftment
Gradual immune system recovery and rehabilitation
Long-Term Follow-Up
Sheba’s dedicated survivorship clinic supports children as they grow, focusing on:
Development and hormonal health
Fertility preservation
Long-term quality of life
Clinical Outcomes & Success Rates
Sheba is recognized internationally for its strong clinical outcomes:
Leukemia (ALL/AML): ~70–85% success in early remission stages
Non-malignant diseases: Often over 90% cure rates with matched donors
Primary immunodeficiencies: ~80–90% survival when treated early
For high-risk cases, combining CAR-T therapy with BMT has further improved outcomes, offering new hope where options were previously limited.
